Consuming a healthful diet that is adequate, moderate, balanced, and varied which means eating all kinds of different foods in moderation and not eating a lot of one kind of foods and very little of the others will boost energy and help fight disease. All foods have nutrients and vitamins that are used  by the body to perform all kinds of tasks to keep us in good health. However, consuming a diet that is rich in one kind of nutrients and poor in others might impact our health negatively, that is why a balanced and varied diet is very important.

Consuming a diet that contains inadequate level of certain nutrients can cause malnutrition over a long period of time. A restrictive diet such as skipping meals daily to stay in shape and avoiding foods that contain fat can cause low energy levels and many other health problems. To maintain a healthy weight we should eat the right amounts of food. Adding extra calories to the diet (by drinking a lot of soft drinks for example) can cause excessive weight. Reducing food intake or exercising more would be needed to burn the extra calories.

Eating whatever we want is very easy, however, designing a healthful diet is not as easy. One thing that can be done to help design a diet is reading food labels which include nutrition information. Things to look for are: serving size, total calories and calories from fat per serving, percent daily values, the list of nutrients and the footnote which usually says that the percent daily values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet, and that each individual's needs may be different based on calorie needs.

Healthy weight varies from one person to another. A healthful weight is not necessarily one in which a person is very thin. To evaluate weight we should calculate our body mass index which is the ratio of the weight to the height, so a short person should not have the same weight as a taller person and vice versa.
