to the common misconception that all fats are bad for you, certain
fats are essential to good health when taken in needed amounts. Fats
provide our bodies with needed fat-soluble vitamins (A,D,E, and K) and
fatty acids. Consuming certain fats such as saturated fat and
trans-fatty acids are known to increase the risk of many diseases,
however, eating a diet that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can help
reduce the risk of heart disease. Carbohydrates are the
prefered energy source for all nerve cells including the brain's nerve cells.
They are broken down into glucose in the liver and then used for energy. If
enough glucose is not provided due to a low carbohydrates diet the body will
make glucose from protein. When that happens, the body cannot use the amino
acids from those proteins to make new cells, support our immune system, or
perform any of their many essential tasks. There are two kinds of carohydrates:
simple (which causes many health problems when consumed in large quantities),
and complex (which is the healthier kind of carbohydrates). Whole grains,
cereals, fruits, and vegetables are all good sources of complex
carbohydrates. Proteins are essential components
of all tissues of the human body. They are made up of nine essential
and eleven nonessential amino acids. Their function is determined by
their shape. Proteins help in cell maintenance, repair, and growth,
they act as hormones and enzymes. They also help in maintaining a
strong immune system, keeping a balance between acids and bases
as well as electrolytes and fluids. Proteins can also be used as a
source of energy in certain circumstances. Proteins are very important to
keep our bodies in good health, however, consuming too much protein in
our diets can be very harmful as that may raise our cholesterol levels,
increase the risk for kidney disease, and contribute to bone loss
because too much protein in the diet increases Calcium excretion. So,
just like other nutrients, protein is very good for us when taken in
the right amounts. Not getting enough of it, as well as getting too
much of it will cause health problems. Good sources of protein are meat, soy and dairy products, nuts, legumes, and whole grains.
